The Waorani were the last indigenous tribe living in the Ecuadorian Amazon to be contacted by western cultures in the 20th century. The first sustained peaceful contact was made by US missionaries in 1958 (Wallis, 1973).
Huaorani people have lived as forest hunters and gatherers in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon for hundreds of years. Numbering approximately 1,300, the Huaorani are a relatively isolated indigenous group inhabiting the eastern Amazonian region of Ecuador.
