Waorani Expedition
The Waorani were the last indigenous tribe living in the Ecuadorian Amazon to be contacted by western cultures in the 20th century. US missionaries made the first sustained peaceful contact in 1958 (Wallis, 1973).
Waorani people have lived as forest hunters and gatherers in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon for hundreds of years. Numbering approximately 1,300, the Waorani are a relatively isolated indigenous group inhabiting the eastern Amazonian region of Ecuador.
