A LEGENDARY TRAIL RUNNING MOUNTAIN JOURNEY

Designed for runners who want

real mountain conditions.

This project proposes a 7-day high-altitude trail running camp in Ecuador, inspired by the training experience that François D’Haene had during his previous visit to the country. The camp is designed for intermediate to intermediate-advanced runners, combining consistent mileage, elevation gain, and progressive altitude adaptation along Ecuador’s famous Avenue of Volcanoes—including a summit attempt of the iconic Cotopaxi Volcano.

The experience will be led by François D’Haene together with the Wild Explorers team, guiding daily trail runs through some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes in the Andes. In addition to running, François will contribute with educational talks and practical sessions, sharing his knowledge on topics such as trail running training, nutrition, running technique, the use of poles, and race preparation.

Beyond the athletic component, the camp will also include strong cultural and gastronomic experiences, such as:

  • A visit to the Otavalo Market, the largest indigenous market in South America.

  • A local Andean hacienda experience.

  • Traditional Ecuadorian gastronomy.

Overall, this will be a unique high-altitude training experience, combining trail running, adventure, culture, and gastronomy, allowing participants to train in one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the world alongside one of the most respected athletes in the sport.

FROM PAST RUNNERS

Those who've been there,

say it best.

"

We had so much fun and it was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my running career! You will experience Ecuador from the high mountains in the Andes to the deep jungles of the Amazon. We will run, raft, explore, sight see, eat, and so much more. The food is wonderful, the accommodations are great, and the vibes are out of this world. You will truly get the local experience with local guides and knowledge.

"

Each day brought a new challenge and a new reward as we ran through the mountains, including visits to the breathtaking Cotopaxi and Lake Quilotoa. The highlight was reaching altitudes of up to 5,000 meters and running toward the iconic Chimborazo – an experience that left me in awe of both nature’s beauty and our own resilience. The group I was part of turned this adventure into something truly special. Not only did I get to run alongside Hayden Hawks @hawks_hayden , but I also formed lasting friendships with fellow runners who shared the same passion and spirit.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

Everything you need

to know before you go.

How much spending money should I bring?
+

Most meals, accommodations, transportation, and activities are included in the retreat, so you won’t need a large amount of spending money. We recommend bringing approximately $150–$300 USD for personal expenses such as souvenirs, snacks, beverages, optional gratuities for guides and drivers, or any purchases you may wish to make in Puerto Natales. Credit cards are widely accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops, but it's always a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for smaller purchases.

What wildlife can I expect to see?
+

Torres del Paine National Park is home to some of Patagonia’s most iconic wildlife. During our runs, hikes, and excursions, you may encounter guanacos grazing across the open plains, foxes, armadillos, and a variety of bird species, including condors soaring overhead. If we're lucky, we may even spot a puma, although sightings are rare and always a special experience. The region’s diverse ecosystems, from forests and grasslands to lakes and glaciers, provide excellent opportunities to observe Patagonia’s unique wildlife in its natural habitat.

What type of terrain will we run on?
+

Patagonia offers a diverse and exciting mix of trail running terrain. Throughout the retreat, we'll run on well-established singletrack trails, dirt roads, forest paths, open grasslands, and rocky mountain terrain with stunning views of Torres del Paine, glaciers, lakes, and rivers. Some routes include gentle rolling sections, while others feature moderate climbs and uneven surfaces typical of mountain trails. The terrain is varied but highly rewarding, making this retreat perfect for runners who enjoy exploring nature at a comfortable pace while experiencing some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.

What flights should I book?
+

To join the retreat, you will first need to fly into Santiago, Chile (SCL). From Santiago, you will take a domestic flight to Puerto Natales (PNT), the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. Domestic flights are typically operated by LATAM Airlines, although other airlines may also offer service depending on the season. We recommend waiting to book your flights until the retreat is confirmed, and our team will provide recommended arrival and departure times to ensure smooth transfers and a stress-free start to your Patagonia adventure.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?
+

Patagonia is known for its unpredictable weather and dramatic landscapes. During our retreat in April, temperatures typically range from 40–65°F (5–18°C), with cool mornings, mild afternoons, and the possibility of wind, rain, or sunshine all in the same day. The key to staying comfortable is dressing in layers. While conditions can change quickly, April is one of the most beautiful times to visit, with fewer crowds, stunning autumn colors, and spectacular views throughout Torres del Paine National Park.

What should I pack for Patagonia?
+

Patagonia is famous for experiencing all four seasons in a single day, so dressing in layers is essential. We recommend bringing trail running shoes, comfortable hiking clothes, a waterproof jacket, a warm insulated layer, gloves, a beanie, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small daypack for daily adventures. For the kayaking excursion, we will provide the necessary equipment, but we suggest bringing quick-dry clothing and an extra set of clothes. A detailed packing list will be provided before departure to ensure you're fully prepared for Patagonia’s ever-changing conditions.

Do I need to pay any additional Galápagos fees?
+

Yes. Foreign visitors must pay:

USD 200 Galápagos National Park Entrance Fee (upon arrival in Galápagos).
USD 20 INGALA Transit Control Card (at Quito Airport before departure to Galápagos).

These fees are not included in the trip price and must be paid directly to the Ecuadorian authorities.

How much spending money should I bring?
+

Most personal expenses are minimal, but we recommend bringing extra funds for souvenirs, additional snacks, drinks, gratuities, and personal purchases. Credit cards are accepted in many places, though cash is useful on some islands.

Can non-runners join the trip?
+

Absolutely. Partners, friends, and family members are welcome. Many activities can be enjoyed regardless of running ability, making this a fantastic adventure for active travelers and nature lovers alike

Is snorkeling equipment included?
+

Yes, snorkeling equipment is typically provided during the organized snorkeling excursions.

Are boat rides included?
+

Yes. The itinerary includes inter-island boat transfers and excursions by boat, including the visit to Los Túneles for snorkeling.

What is the weather like in Galápagos?
+

Galápagos enjoys warm temperatures year-round, generally between 20°C and 30°C (68°F–86°F). Conditions can vary depending on the season, with cooler ocean temperatures from June to November and warmer conditions from December to May.

What should I pack?
+

Trail running shoes
Lightweight running clothing
Hat or cap
Sunglasses
Reef-safe sunscreen
Swimsuit
Lightweight towel
Daypack or running vest
Reusable water bottle or hydration system
Sandals or comfortable shoes for the evenings
Waterproof jacket or light rain shell
Dry bag for boat excursions and kayaking
Snorkeling mask (optional, equipment is usually provided)
Personal medications

What wildlife can I expect to see?
+

The Galápagos Islands are home to giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, rays, sea turtles, and a wide variety of endemic species. Wildlife encounters are part of the daily experience.

What type of terrain will we run on?
+

Expect a variety of surfaces, including coastal trails, volcanic terrain, dirt roads, lava rock sections, and island paths. The routes are scenic rather than highly technical, allowing you to enjoy the landscapes and wildlife along the way.

Do I need to be an experienced runner?
+

No. This trip is designed for active travelers who enjoy running and exploring outdoors. Daily runs can be adapted to different fitness levels, and participants are encouraged to move at their own pace.

What should I bring?
+

Mandatory: trail running backpack (1L+ water capacity), hydration system, personal nutrition/gels, waterproof jacket, two pairs of trail shoes, cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, long tights, long sleeve technical shirt, insulated down jacket, GPS watch, thermal emergency blanket. Highly recommended: trail running poles, light gloves, buff, electrolyte tablets, headlamp. Conditions in the Andes shift quickly — travel light, pack smart.

What if I can't run one day?
+

We have private transportation available. If you need a break, the group will meet you at the next checkpoint so you will not miss out on the views or the experience.

Is this just for male runners?
+

Absolutely not. This retreat is open to everyone. Whether you come alone, with a friend, or a partner, you will feel included and supported. Our guides are both men and women, ensuring a balanced and welcoming experience for all.

What if I'm traveling solo?
+

Solo travelers are more than welcome — about 95% of participants come alone. This is your chance to meet like-minded adventurers and form friendships that last well beyond the trail. For double occupancy, we will pair you with a same-gender roommate.

What if I'm the slowest in the group?
+

You don't need to worry about pace. We operate with three professional guides for the group, which allows us to divide participants according to their level each day. Stronger runners can move ahead at their rhythm, while others maintain a steady and comfortable pace. No one is left behind or pressured to run beyond their limits.

What if I'm not used to altitude?
+

Altitude is not something you need to fear, but it is something you should respect. We strongly recommend arriving in Quito at least two days before the retreat begins. The structure of the camp is intentionally progressive — elevation and distances increase gradually, allowing your body to acclimatize step by step in a safe and controlled way.

Who can join this Trip?
+

Participants should ideally be comfortable running around 30–40 miles per week on varied terrain and should have experience with trail running including some elevation gain. This ensures you'll fully enjoy the adventure and keep up with the group. You will be guided throughout the entire tour by our expert guides.
